Balaban’s® Now Offers Blue Plate Lunch Specials

Blue Plate Specials might appear to contrast with one of the finer kitchens in town; nevertheless, this fall Balaban’s started that type of lunch offering.

Unlike Balaban’s fine dining awards and decadent cuisine offerings, the Blue Plate Special refers to economy rather than luxury. The term, according to various word histories, came into existence when diners sprung up across the U.S. in the late 19th and early 20th Century.  Diners, the original fast food restaurants named for their similarity to railroad dining cars, offered  reduced pricing for a complete meal served on divided plates– usually blue.

For $12 plus tax and gratuity, Executive Chef D. Scott Phillips serves up a Blue Plate daily special, reminiscent of the 1920s and the mid-20th Century, for a quick weekday business lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Monday finds the chef recreating his grandmother’s meatloaf with roasted potatoes and fresh green beans. Tuesday brings chicken pot pie with Southern biscuits while Wednesday boasts Yankee style beef pot roast. After Italian stuffed peppers on Thursday, Chef Phillips said he sells out of Friday’s fried chicken with home-style coleslaw and mashed potatoes.

Chesterfield Receives Certificate of Excellence
in Financial Reporting

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) presents Chesterfield with the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its 2014 comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR).

The award represents a significant achievement by the City, as it is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting. Its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management. The CAFR has been judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program including demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the CAFR.

When a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting is granted to an entity, an Award of Financial Reporting Achievement is also presented to the individual or department designated as being primarily responsible for preparing the award-winning CAFR. This has been presented to the Finance Department of the City of Chesterfield.

The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association serving approximately 17,500 government finance professionals throughout North America.
